Facebook Community and Disclosure Behaviours

Abstract—Facebook has become a huge virtual community with millions of members. This paper examines the perceptions of community and disclosure behaviours among Malaysian Facebook users. Quantitative data was collected via an online survey. Chi-square was run to find the association between these two aspects. Findings show that the participants were cautious about their Facebook disclosures. Though they believe the Facebook community to be neither stable, nor realistic, they thought it detrimental to share real problems with friends known only on Facebook; and they preferred to remain anonymous; however, a high percentage of them agreed that they had a sense of belonging to this Facebook community.
