A New Gender Revolution in China: Beyond the Resumption of a Historical Authenticity

Huai Bao

Abstract—This study examines the revival of the nandan tradition in jingju, the trends of gender transgression in popular media in Mainland China, and the relationship between the two of them. The “revival” of the historical “authenticity” and the increasing popularity of drag on mainstream media are both the product of consumer economy in the digital age and a growing awareness of the complexity of human nature.

Index Terms—Sexuality, gender, performance, media.
