Recent Chinese Malaysians' Political Decision: A Matter of Rational Choice

Chin Yee Mun, Chang Yun Fah, and Wu Ming Chu

Abstract—In many multi-ethnic societies, ethnic politics plays an influential role in determining the outcome of elections. However, in these societies, voting decisions may also be influenced by their members’ civic consciousness. This paper aims to explore the possibility that in a multi-ethnic society, voting decisions are made based on both ethnic and civic consciousness considerations. A study on Chinese Malaysians’ voting decisions was conducted to investigate this phenomenon. Findings from this study show both factors play vital role in shaping Chinese Malaysians voting decision. This reflects the fact that a voter is rational and when he votes he will support any political party that is able to protect his interest be it in the form of ethnic rights or civic rights.

Index Terms—Ethnic, ethnic identity, ethnic socialization.
