Looking Back and Looking Forward: Adult Learnings from the Chinese Social Movement

Abstract—Drawing on theories in social movement, this paper provides a profile of the 1989 Beijing Student Movement (BSW): its recruitment, participation, leadership structures, and its basic cultural, symbolic, material resources as well as core repertoires. It is hoped to shed light on relevant studies of social movement learning in Chinese political environment.

Index Terms—Adult learning, social movement, tilly approach, knowledge production.
